Torvald Helmer's Sympathy Scale: Where do you lie? | ENGLISH LITERATURE

Torvald Helmer is a character with many different personalities. He is a character that I truly strongly despise and have no sympathy for him. One of the main reason that made me lose my sympathy for Torvald was the way he treated Nora when he was drunk. Helmer: When I watched the seductive figures of the Tarantella, my blood was on fire; I could endure it no longer, and that was why I brought you down so early- Nora: Go away Torvald! You must let me go. I won’t- Helmer: What’s that? You’re joking my little Nora! You won’t- you won’t? Am I not your husband-? At this point in the play, Nora is seen clearly uncomfortable and does not want her husband to touch her. In the dialogue, the stage directions indicate that Nora is trying to make space between them. An example of this would be [she moves to the other side of the table], while Torvald continues to try to get closer to her and follows her.
